A2X is designed to connect the data between your sales channels (Shopify, Amazon, etc.) and your accounting software. Typically, if you don’t use a tool like A2X, then lump sum payments from your sales channels like Shopify will hit your books. These are net sales figures that include both sales but also taxes, refunds, and fees (like shipping fees). These amounts either won't be properly reflected in your books or it will be a time consuming process to import and categorize them. The other alternative is to directly integrate to Shopify using the pre-built integrations from QuickBooks or Xero. If you decide to do this, then the individual order data from Shopify will come into your books. This is okay if you’re getting less than a couple hundred orders a month, but will quickly become unsustainable. A2X integrates with our recommended accounting tools QuickBooks and Xero and will make it easier to keep accurate books. Unlike competitors, A2X will reconcile to the cash hitting your accounts as opposed to daily summaries (cleaner for your bookkeeping).
A2X was founded by Paul Grey in 2014 in New Zealand. This is also the birthplace of Xero’s accounting software (interesting that this is the home of accounting software innovation).
A2X pulls in uncategorized data from your sales channels and automatically categorizes it for your books. You create a map of accounts that maps the sales data line items to your chart of accounts. It then automatically posts the summaries into your accounting software.
QuickBooks purchased the app integrator OneSaaS in 2021, but unfortunately their current out-of-the-box Shopify integration still isn’t great. Unfortunately, when these acquisitions happen the acquirer often doesn’t prioritize them internally and the quality suffers. We think that is the case with the OneSaaS acquisition. We’ve heard a similar story about their 2020 TradeGecko acquisition.
If you have some basic understanding of excel you could create a tool that mimics A2X’s functionality, but we think the time savings from a tool like A2X is worth it for most eCommerce businesses that have scaled to over a couple hundred orders a month.
